Documents Concerning Rubashov the Gambler
It’s New Year’s Eve of 1899 and in Saint Petersburg the gambler Josef Rubashov sits alone in a hotel room, penniless, indebted, and feeling miserable. An unexpected visitor, the Devil, comes to see him and suggests a game of cards, which Rubashov can’t resist.
When loosing, the Devil wins his soul and since Hell is full, he is condemned to immortality. For the next hundred years, Rubashov follows the European development in person, unable to die and leave his sufferings behind.
