New Collected Poems, Tomas Tranströmer
Who really reads poetry nowadays?
Many people read poetry in their youth when they are looking for an expression for all their intense emotions. In grief we return.
Many read the poems in obituaries, some of which may turn out mundane while others can capture the most intense feelings in the proximity of death.
One of last year's most popular Christmas gifts in Sweden was no doubt Tomas Tranströmer’s volume of collected poems, which had already been published for the author's 80th birthday in A...

The Grand Larsson
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a huge 500 page opus, multi-layered, multi-character tale by a writer of some considerable power. Full of social conscience and compassion, with considerable insight into the nature of moral corruption, it just knocked me out. This book took over my life this weekend, as when I was away from the narrative I became grumpy and desperate to return to the story, such is the power of this work.
I read it in two sittings, with the final stint a five hour marat...

Couldn't put it down
The book is 465 pages. I started it in the Barnes and Noble over a cup of coffee on Sunday afternoon. Within the first 15 pages, I knew I had to buy the book, something I don't usually do. I finished the book Wednesday morning around 3 am. I knew when Salander threw Blomkvist's Christmas present in the garbage that there had to be a sequel. No one would leave this character hanging like this. Don't start this book if you don't have time to finish it. Once you start, you won't want to...

wow
The 3 best novels I have ever read. Plotting was brilliant, charactors vibrant and believable. If only Stieg was still around to give us more. I desperately wanted to find out how it all ended, but was enjoying the books so much that I did not want to reach the end. (If that makes any sense).

Enthusiasm !!!
Millenium Trilogy...the ULTIMATE read !
Exudes thrill/suspenseful expectations of Lisbeth's subtle emerging energy
and intellectual strategic preparedness executed with amazing precision whether by herself or collaboratively.
Would there be another Stieg Larsson ?

Wow What a read!
Never have I enjoyed picking up a book as I have over the last few weeks as I ingested The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, wolfed down The Girl Who Played with Fire and devoured The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. Such wonderfully written, edge of your seat, can't put 'em down books! My only hope is that Eva manages to get that fourth book -God's Revenge - published in Stieg's memory but retains the rights to herself. Such a loss...I was never so sad as I turned to the last page in the bo...

i watched the movie today was disgusted by it ! i hated all the characters they all had a fucked up side to them ! this movie only promoted violence and rape and only sickos would enjoy this movie !
it made me feel really small as a women to watch the rape scenes as i did not think Lisabeth who is meant to be really clever would be belittled like that ! i mean surely she must have known the fat guy was not right in the head !
i think the movie concentrated too much on the rape and violenc...

loved it, loved it , loved it
Hi, I just finished reading the first book of the series and I am starting on the second one ASAP. I read a lot and I was totally caught up in the credibility of the characters (strenghts and weaknesses), the logical progression of the crime solving, etc. etc. A very powerful read (no useless banter or fillers here!!!). I simply could not put this book down......

Who Wins?
Characters in this book range from sympathetic to unbelievable. Blomqvist is everyman, highly talented; we like him in spite of his failings. Salander (The Girl ...) is the techie researcher/savant who rights wrongs in her own way - the antihero. Henrik Vanger supposedly doesn't know anything about serial killers and sexual deviants in his own family; he's not believable. Set in austere and frigid northern Sweden, this is a book you can't put down until the mystery is solved. Many them...

Spoiler Alert: Stieg Larsson's "Millennium" trilogy is AWESOME
Forget sleeping or working for 2 weeks: once you've got your hands on these nearly-1000-pages-each books you won't put them down. The dark shadows under my eyes are testament to how gripping these stories were.
If you haven't read them yet, close this window because I'm about to dive into details (and you wouldn't want to ruin the story for yourself. Honestly, even if you won't read them then wait for the movies to come out in English).
SPOILER ALERT (no lawsuits henceforth):

A riptide of a read
Steig larssons millennium trilogy is, I feel, truly a masterpiece, with more slippery twists than a pit of vipers. He weaves the reader in to ever deeper plot and sub-plot with such flair, that I just could not put it down. Dark and disturbing? Oh Yes!gruesome? undoubtedly! but brilliant in its composition. Real seat of your pants excitement right to the end. The only great shame of it all is that there will be no more. RIP Steig. Thanks for the ride.

Multilayered Read!!
Graphically real, this series looks at so many societal issues..one of the greatest being the "systems" in place that are to protect children. Lisbeth is a very real person in many societies.
"Abuse of power" demonstrated in these books made me cringe.
The "layers of deceit" within institutions that allows innocents to suffer and the foibles of the human condition that cover them up is devastating.
On the contrary, I disagree with the reader's comment of "what an imagination!". I think S...

This book left me COLD
A mystery. Yes, a disappearance. On an island off the coast of Stockholm, accessible only by one bridge, a teenage girl has disappeared. The man hired to look into this mystery (the Swedish equivalent of Hercule Poirot, perhaps), is Mikael Blomqvist, an investigative financial reporter in his forties, who specializes in exposing sleaze and corruption for a magazine he co-owns with his married lover.
The only problem is: this is what they call a ?cold case.? Harriet Vanger went missing ...

All Chacteristics of a Great Story
I believe a lot of the problem preconceived about this movie is it's depth. This is not a bad thing, but rather, not to be taken as 'light watching' material. The subject matter, albeit heavy, is beautifully portrayed without glorifying the horrific nature of the acts. Not for everyone; definately a movie aimed for an audience seeking an intense thriller over the course of many hours. Not recommended for those that enjoy quick thrillers with fast plot development and minimal character devel...

Addictive
A mind blowing story about a girl who is out an out fighter. The book is captivating and right paced. The way the story unravels keeps you hooked right till the end.
The character Lisbeth Salander inspires both awe and sympathy. The girl has seen the worst and is prepared for even more. Her spirit to fight all odds and come out successful is just awesome.
The books clearly show how a father-daughter relationship can affect the psychology of a child and what can become of her.

I don't know where to start, was what I read good or bad? Something inbetween, parhaps? No, it was just out of the leauge of what we usually see. Brilliant! I was left wanting more!
I went from one book to the next as fast I could. Inspired by the depth of the characterizations, I wa led into a world I knew nothing about and felt captive there. Larsson's background in journalism seems to have left a huge imprint on his work, which I fully appreciate. To me at least, the skill of the journalist and the skill of the novelist became an unbeatable combination--at least as reflected in this remarkable Trilogy. I was left wanting more.

This series keeps getting better and better! I love the first book and thought that Larsson played the characters brilliantly. With this book, he didn't hesitant on giving his twist that will make you say, "What??? Is that for real?" I mean I had that same feeling near the end of the book. When I thought that it was great with how the story goes, then I read another twist which makes the book so explosive. This is a great read especially for people like me that loves mystery suspense.

WOW!
So many excellent books I have read in the past have had weak endings - almost as if the writer had lost interest and finished the work quickly. But the Millennium trilogy was totally satisfying. I can't remember reading such exciting detective novels since the early novels of Patricia Cornwell. Each page kept me spellbound! What a tragedy this great writer died so young.

Stilted writing
I have got to be one of the three people in the world who did not like this book. Yes, the plot is different and the Salander character is someone whose like we have not seen before. However, the writing is incredibly stiff and dry. In my opnion, the author had little skill in either developing characters or getting to the point.
The book is over 800 pages long. After the first 300 pages I still found the main characters to be one dimensional and poorly drawn. I had nearly put the b...

Average detective story
I quite liked the book in general, it is compulsive reading material. However, the first 200 and the last 100 pages were boring. The whole Wennerstrom line of the story was unrealistic and unattractive. The main story was interesting but very predictable. It was clear from the beginning that Harriet used to be abused by her father, that she had killed him and finally ran away. There were so many hints to that. It was also clear that there were more than a single criminal in the family. In ...

Painfully real.
The complexity and depth of Lisbeth is painfully real. Larsson intuitively understood the ramifications of sexism, violence, and hatred of powerful and smart women. I identify with her rage and know that Larsson had a depth of compassion for women that is inexplicable. Thank you Stieg, and your love of life Eva, for this gift to us.

Absolutely astounding. Nobel consideration should be given
A polished literary form behind a crude facade, that proves successful books are still based on simplicity and passion rather than unintelligible language flourishes. Rich, complex characters, explosive plots and wonderful action. Takes a man who has never seen Sweden all the way there.

Gripping Contemporary Tale
Having finished the second Millennium novel it is clear the late Steig Larsson has delivered a series of outstanding quality set at a furious pace. It may be a well worn cliché about novels being so engrossing that you can't put them down but it certainly applies to Larsson's work. The themes of corporate greed, sexual violence and individual power and handled with confidence and insight. Nevertheless the true strength of the novel is the complex and rich plot which moves at a pace that is ...

An American Perspective
Mikael Blomkvist, in his guise as an ethical and talented reporter, embodies the next phase of human evolution. The millennium trilogy presents the triumph of human rights and constitutional law over criminality and lawlessness, both inside and outside of government.
The wild card variable in this hopeful equation is the warrior-victim Lisbeth Salander, spawned of cold war evil and oppression and meeting both with appropriate violence, stubborn silence and extremely effective actio...
